Allow yourself to be a beginner

awkward beginner midlife shift Mar 17, 2024

This week I found myself in the position of being a beginner for a big new project. The work itself is exciting and I have a clear vision of the near future outcome. However, because it is something I have never done before, I am awkward, unpolished and taking failing first steps again. It kind of sucks. The more accomplished (and judgmental) midlife side of my brain is telling me to go back to the things I already know I am good at doing. She’s saying I’ll look foolish and this has the potential to blow up in my face as a big failure. That voice in my head is persistent and loud. So why not just retreat and go back to my comfort zone?

Carl Jung, the famed Swiss psychiatrist, once said “Where your fear is, this is your task”. I read this quote and immediately understood why this whole scary uncomfortable midlife journey is so important. Lately, my husband and I have both been following very early steps to destinations that are unknown. This project is one of those where we have a vision but the ultimate finish line will reveal itself when we get there. So as the fear continues to creep up I have a few new positive self-talks that I will refer to in order to keep pushing through and forward. I shared them with you here:

#1- Don't let fear of looking silly hold you back. Remember, even the most accomplished people were once beginners, and growth rarely happens in the comfort zone. Embrace the awkwardness – it's a badge of courage you wear as you break new ground.

#2- Midlife is a prime time to rewrite my story. I have the experience to navigate challenges and the wisdom to appreciate the journey. Use this to your advantage and chase those dreams you put on hold earlier.

#3- Think of this as an adventure, not a risk. There will be bumps along the road, but the satisfaction of accomplishment and the potential to discover hidden talents make it all worthwhile. You might surprise yourself with what you're capable of!

So tell me…what’s your scary and exciting project? Let’s take this leap together and see where the adventure leads.

Post on social media (LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook) and tag me @akilahwillery and @upskillservices if this helps. Use the hashtag #Akilahupskilledme and tell your story. Let me in on your journey so I can cheer you on and celebrate each win.
