Don't Quit Your Job (Yet!)

Chatting with a colleague this week had me chuckling about how my message has been received by a few. I gave a brief informational talk recently that she listened to and was pumped to provide feedback. She told me, “I was so motivated by your message that I was ready to quit my job!”. I was like whoa Nelly! Yes, it was great to see her so ready to jump into her journey to reach her next big goal, but quitting her job first? Nah, that was the disconnect. So I had to check myself and make sure the message was clear for you too. By the time educators like you come to me for help, they’ve already made some crucial decisions. They’ve identified a goal they want to reach. Many times that is a leap from education into a new industry. Sometimes that means they’ve been a classroom teacher and have their eyes set on a big administrative role. In either case, I coach them through the steps to make a confident transition and eliminate all the overwhelm. 

One thing is consistent in what I tell them. The best time to look for a new job is while you still have one. In other words, don’t lose your current steady paycheck while you are making the leap. Moving into a new industry or a new leadership role does not require you to drop everything all at once. There is a strategy I teach to help you focus only on the moves that produce the greatest impact in your job search. If you leave your current job in some overly dramatic leap of faith, you might create a desperate situation where you settle for something undesirable just to keep your bills paid. I am all about you getting and keeping your money, honey! At my age (and probably yours too) I am not trying to lower our standards for anything. Also, I will never tell you to leave or stay in your education role. That decision is deeply personal and you should be in a quiet comfortable state of mind to make the choice that is best for you.
