What time of year are companies doing the most hiring?
Sep 30, 2024If you're an educator, you are probably used to an annual employment contract that starts in July and ends in June the following year. This means much of the hiring and promotions take place during the summer months, before the instructional calendar begins. However, this is not the case for other industries. If you are looking to move into roles outside of education, then you need to know when hiring is most likely to happen so you can work backwards. You need enough time to get prepared, with an updated resume and portfolio so you can apply when the time comes. You also need enough time to build and nurture your professional network so you are not applying to roles as a complete stranger to your companies of choice.
So when are companies doing the most hiring? According to Indeed.com, the month of February is "peak hiring time". Jobs are most likely to be posted in January, and hiring managers are most likely to begin interviewing in February. Why is this? It is because hiring and job posting happens at the beginning of the fiscal (budget) year. The start of the budget year for companies is the start of the calendar year (Jan-Feb). The start of the budget year for education organizations is the summer (June-July). Internal education promotions can happen at time of the year, but pay attention to when retirements are most likely to take place from individuals in upper leadership. In my experience, this was December. So this meant internal promotions would follow soon after (Jan-Feb).
