Tips for Educators Transitioning into Tech, Energy, or Medical Fields

Hey friend, hey! Let's say you and I sit down for a chat over coffee.  You tell me you've made the decision to transition out of education and into another field. This will be the start of your final year with your school organization. You're equally excited and terrified, because education has been your whole career. You're courageous enough to know you want something new, but completely unsure of what your next step should be. The first thing you ask me is how to prepare. Well of course because I am your best hype girl, I arrive at this coffee chat with some tips of how you can start preparing yourself for a big shift into another industry. Since I live in the energy capital and medical center home base to the world, I tend to lean towards those industries when gauging options (but there are so many other options to consider too!). Depending what field you are interested in, here are some of the tips I would share with you.

Tech Industry

  • Upskill and Reskill: Consider online courses or bootcamps in programming languages like Python, Java, or JavaScript. Explore data analysis, user experience design, or project management certifications.

  • Highlight Transferable Skills: Emphasize your ability to problem-solve, communicate complex ideas clearly, and manage projects effectively - all essential skills in tech.

  • Leverage Educational Experience: Highlight your experience in creating engaging content, managing diverse groups, and adapting to new technologies. These skills are valuable in tech roles like technical writing, instructional design, or training and development.

Energy Industry

  • Explore Relevant Areas: Consider roles in energy education, sustainability, or renewable energy. Your ability to explain complex concepts clearly is a valuable asset.

  • Network Strategically: Attend industry conferences and events to connect with professionals in the energy sector.

  • Gain Industry Knowledge: Stay updated on energy trends, policies, and technologies through industry publications and online resources.

Medical Field

  • Consider Healthcare Administration: Your experience in managing people and resources can be valuable in healthcare administration roles.

  • Explore Medical Education: If you have a passion for teaching, consider roles in medical education or nursing education.

  • Highlight Patient-Centric Approach: Your focus on student well-being translates well into patient care. Emphasize your ability to build rapport, communicate effectively, and provide support.
